The found footage genre is about played out, but thankfully people have been trying to step out of the box to do new things with it. At this point the most important aspect to make these films work is to have an interesting and clever story to make it stand out. The latest Abducted seems to leave things to the imagination while taking a familiar approach, but does it work?
Abducted follows a group of young couples who are kidnapped in Griffith Park by unseen Abductors and must fight to escape certain death. The idea of this movie is really good and the execution works on some level, but the biggest issue comes with the initial pacing. It definitely keeps you guessing to where they are going with the final result throughout, but it’s filled with clichéd characters and takes a bit too long to really get interesting. The pacing is a bit slow at first, but once it finally gets going it does pick up a bit. They intelligently pushed to try and keep building the mystery throughout, all while giving you clues to where it may or may not be heading. Everything here could in fact lead to aliens or just crazed people so it never makes the mistake of leaning too far in either direction. This is one of those films that works within the meat of it, but struggles to really find its overall direction.
By the time it ends, this film manages to work fairly well and delivers a bit more than you might think, but not quit as much as it could have. It would have been preferable for them to make a definitive decision to the outcome. They attempted to throw a curve for the ending but ends up leaving it a bit flat with no real explanation to what happened and instead tried to be creative and it just misses the mark. If you are a fan of the found footage horror genre, then give this one a try as it does sport some good gore moments and an intriguing idea that may work for some.
