After last nights American Idol results show people wonder if American Idol still remains the popularity contest or talent contest. American Idol promised early on this year that it would be a contest of vocal talent and not a popularity contest. Phillip Phillips American Idols season 2012 winner is a great artist he came from a talented family but he is not what the American public considers an American Idol. During the 2012 season of American Idol we all believed so strongly that Jessica Sanchez, Joshua Ledet, and Holly Cavanaugh would be our top three contenders to become our 2012 American Idol. However, what I call the teenie boop vote (young girls between ages of 13-23 with 10 emails address and the energy to vote an infinite amount of times for the cutest guy) pushed Phillip Phillips through to the American Idol finals to become the American Idol 2012 lack luster recording artist. The teenie booper vote is about 45% of American Idol viewers.

American Idol promised us changes for the 2013 season that would weed out the teenie boop vote, but nothing has changed. Last nights results were a shocking reality. All the judges agreed that top contenders for American Idol 2013 should be, Amber, Angie, Candice, and Kree. If you have been watching the show you would probably agree that these girls sing their faces off. But, American Idol has not been a singing contest for the last several years. The teenie boop vote has diminished American Idol into a popularity contest where less than average singers like Kris Allen, Lee DeWyze, Scott McCreery, and Phillip Phillips can win American Idol because they are the “cute looking white dudes” that the teenie boopers love to support.

What we learned from last nights show is the teenie booper vote is still alive and strong. Why? Because Burrell the best of the male singers for American Idol 2013 was booted off the show in the number seven position, its clear American Idol has nothing to do with talent. It was Judge Randy Jackson, in his most heartless tone of voice who told Ryan and Burrell they would not save Burrell. Is it me or is it just plain rude that Judge Randy Jackson, never gives an artist his undivided attention when they sing for their life. Judge Randy Jackson is extremely uncouth during the results shows and he allows all of American to see him squabble with the other judges that he is not voting to save the artist before the artist is done performing. I don’t blame Devin for turning his back to the judges. Hey American Idol judges it would be nice if you at least acted like you were paying attention during “save your life performances” especially you Randy.

What is more shocking is Lazaro remains a top seed in this melodramatic American Idol 2013 story. Lazaro’s story is courageous and scandalous at the same time. We all get that Lazaro struggles to speak without stuttering, but when he sings he seems to have found a place in his voice where the stuttering has disappeared and it seems like a miracle. However, it is scandalous because there are clearly moments when Lazaro is on camera and he seems to forget he has a stuttering problem and he is relaxed and speaking just fine. It reminds us all of the war veteran scandal on “America’s Got Talent” who lied about his stuttering problem!

Larazo’s American Idol story is quite unique. As a singer Lazaro is not the worst, but he is far from the top three seed. Lazaro, has made every blunder a contestant can make on reality vocal contest and remains unaffected. He has cried about the judges’ criticizing him, (by the way that’s what judges do) and the voters were even more sympathetic. He has lied about his how much time he had to practice songs, but the viewers don’t care. He forgets the words of the songs and he admits it, and the public forgives him. All Lazaro has to do is keep smiling into the camera and he will be the next lack luster American Idol recording artist. If Lazaro was competing on “The Voice”, America’s Got Talent” or “The X Factor” his story would have been over two months ago, the fact that American Idol still has Lazaro around is everything that is wrong with American Idol.
