Nothing gets a lover of vintage machines old Evinrude running more than stories about hidden mechanical treasures. The quest for the proverbial “barn find” that keeps us poking our heads through cracked-open garage doors, peering over battered fences, defying Beware of Dog signs, and in this case, asking “What’s in your boat house?” Don Matson’s book answers that last question through 24 different stories about great old boat discoveries, as well as accounts of vintage boat restorations. Don is well known in the vintage boating community, and his infectious love of old boats comes through in this book.
The stories are not all told by Tom. More than a dozen accounts of old boat finds and restorations are shared by others, and they are really fun to read. Stories about the simplest of runabouts, on up to the magnificent Thunderbird yacht are presented. The story behind the boats from the movie On Golden Pond is wonderful, and the chapter on the discovery of a rare Chris Craft Cobra is fascinating. Even Mr. Outboard himself, Dennis Evinrude , wrote the forward to this book and shares the story of the Evinrude company. A boat load of photos, both vintage and modern, complement each chapter. Any lover of old boats will enjoy this book. Softbound, 144 pages, What’s in Your Boat House is available directly from the author at www.matsonmotors.com, and on Amazon.
