I stand corrected. A few weeks ago, I hammered the Culver City dining scene when I visited the food truck flock on Washington and Overland in Culver City. It was a meager gathering of offerings, and I was not wowed by the layout, the presentation, or the amenities. Obviously, I was at the wrong food truck stop.
But I gave the trucks another chance, when I went to the Visitation School in Westchester last night, and I now understand what this foodie frenzy is all about.
Conestoga wagon style, there were at least 15 trucks circled around the yard of the school, braced and ready to shell out their offerings to the masses. The event began at 5 p.m. and although a few trucks were already in full swing, several were just warming up, which is a black mark in my book. Be ready to go when the dinner bell rings. We’re hungry!
There were many bolted dining tables available, but I think a few more portable tables would have been a nice convenience for the patrons, so they didn’t have to schlep their food across the schoolyard. A few heat lamps would be appreciated, as it got rather chilly as the sun dipped below the horizon.
But the food? Wow!
We opted for a 4-taco special ($10) from Komodo Truck, an Asian sensation, combining varieties of, steak, chicken, fish, shrimp, tempeh, and too many spices for me to remember. What a bargain for $10.
I was stuffed after the tacos, but my gal pal couldn’t resist waiting in line for a few samples from the Lobsta Truck. We had a hefty lobster roll, along with a crab roll. I think both were about $12 each. Both were delish…
Our neighbors raved about the ever-popular Grilled Cheese Truck, combining a number of cheeses, with an endless array of toppings you can stuff into a thick gooey slab of a sandwich. Mac ‘n cheese inside a sandwich? Get out the paddles.
We were out of there by 7 p.m. so didn’t get a chance to enjoy the outdoor entertainment, or the big screen movie for the kids. But it all looked promising.
I really hope this gourmet truck concept makes its way to Westchester again. Parking was a breeze, seating was ample, and as the summer months continue, this venue provides a groovy way the community can come together.
Events like these help to keep LA in the hub of gastro paradise.
More please!
