Hearing all day long about Wendy's New Ciabatta Bacon Cheeseburger, and watching the endless commercials for the product that interrupt your favorite shows, may cause you not to pay too much attention to the just another fast food special slapped on a menu that will be gone a month or two. But look, or should I say, taste, again! Wendy's has raised the bar in drive-thru fare and definitely deserves another try from those who stay away from patronizing fast food establishments for thoughts of cheap, marked-up products made from low quality ingredients.
Well the New Ciabatta Bacon Cheeseburger ups the ante in the food service world and will hopefully cause others to follow if they want to stay competitive in the market. As a culinarian, I must admit that I was a bit curious about the sandwich that was gracing every new Wendy's commercial and radio ad. Being very budget minded, I am not too adept at overspending on careless items like overpriced and usually low quality fast food. A small Ciabatta Bacon Cheeseburger meal costs $8.50 after tax here in Summit County and that price point seemed just a little too high for me.
But on a lucky Saturday morning I came across a few Wendy's coupons in the local newspaper showcasing the new sandwich with some great deals! I used my, "buy a small drink and small fry", coupon and got a free Ciabatta Bacon Cheeseburger! So with fat pockets from the extra five bucks I just saved, I head home with my value meal and coke to see what all of the talk is about.
When I got home I unpacked my meal and immediately began munching on the perfectly fried and delicately crispy fries that were sprinkled with the perfect amount of salt. I unpacked my Ciabatta Bacon Cheeseburger, which came in a large red sandwich box. I cut the burger in half to check out the insides. A light spread of garlic-rosemary aoili graces the top bun and holds the fresh field greens in place. Chopped, oven roasted tomatoes come next, then thick slices of bacon and a satisfying portion of thick Asiago cheese. I grab my cold coke, which is awesome with this meal by the way, and sit down to enjoy. The first bite was even better than expected! The fresh soft ciabatta stood up to the robust ingredients inside without being to tough or overpowering. I could sense the delicate olive oil in the baking of the bread and it paired so well with the roasted tomatoes. The creamy garlic aoli was just the addition it needed to tie everything together! This sandwich gets five stars from me! I found it comparable to on of the gourmet creations at smashburger, or a burger that you would get from a table service restaurant. It was so good that I came back and paid full price after I used up all of my coupons!
