“We’re the Millers” is one of those films that pleasantly surprises, at least that was the case for me. As a fan of Jennifer Aniston, Jason Sudeikis, and Ed Helms, I knew I would find the film funny, but I didn’t think it would be the ‘laugh out loud’ kind of funny.
The comedy follows Sudeikis’ character, David, a should-be-retired drug dealer who still hasn’t quite figured out where his life is headed. After an incident thanks to his unbelievably naïve neighbor Kenny, portrayed by Will Poulter, all of David’s drug dealing money and stash is stolen. To make matters worse, most of what was stolen didn’t belong to David, it belongs to his boss Brad, played by Ed Helms.
Brad will only forgive the debt if David agrees to smuggle pot across the Mexican border. The amount of pot isn’t small though, it is in fact an RV full of pot, but with no other options, Brad accepts the mission impossible. Knowing that he will need help, David enlists his stripper neighbor Rose (Jennifer Aniston), Kenny, and runaway teen Casey (Emma Roberts), to pass as his family – the Miller family. Together, the “Millers” plot their plan on passing as a tourist American family and fooling US border guards.
It wouldn’t be a comedy if things went according to plan though, so it’s not a spoiler to say that the Millers encounter several unfortunate, but pretty hilarious, mishaps.
Throughout the film there are light grins and chuckles, but it does include a couple of scenes that will have viewers laughing out loud. Ed Helms steals the show in every scene he is in, as the douche boss that you’ll love to hate. And friendly American tourist couple Don and Edie (Nick Offerman and Katheryn Hahn) also steals the spotlight, especially in the camp scene that will have audiences laughing.
