Living a greener lifestyle can not only improve your personal impact on the environment, but also the amount of money in your wallet. Saving water is an important part of living a greener lifestyle, and the most water in any home is wasted in inefficient flushing of older model toilets.
Installed in my home since April 2013, Niagara’s 0.8 gallon per flush Stealth toilet is quietly becoming a contender for the most effective water-saving appliance I own. For some perspective, there are still millions of older toilets out there in the world that use 3.5 to 7 gallons per flush (although no toilet sold after 1995 could legally use more than 1.6 gallons of water per flush). Nowadays, there are some dual-flush models that operate at 1.6 gpf or .8 gpf, depending on which button is used, for an average of approximately 1.24 gpf.
This toilet uses 37 percent less water than a high-efficiency toilet and 50 percent less than a standard 1.6 gpf model. If replacing an older 3.5 gpf model, the Stealth toilet can save as much as 20,000 gallons every year. The reason why the toilet is so effective without using large amounts of water is that it also utilizes air. “Water fills the tank and inner chamber, forcing air to the top of the chamber and down the transfer tube. Air is forced through the transfer tube into the trapway exerting positive pressure on the water in the bowl. This pressurizes the trapway and creates a larger water surface area in the bowl. When the flush lever is pressed down, water empties from the tank cleansing the bowl and flushing waste down the trapway. Inside the inner chamber, the vacating flush water creates a vacuum that depressurizes the trapway. This depressurization creates the suction force that pulls the wastewater into the trapway initiating the siphonic flush action. The trapway is completely filled producing an ultra-highly efficient flush.”
Things I like about it:
Typically, a single flush is all that is necessary, and because it only needs to refill .8 gallons, the toilet is ready to flush again quickly.
My water bill has shown a slight decrease in quarterly billing.
It’s attractive and easy to clean.
It has yet to clog or show any signs of trouble when flushing.
It’s quiet and flushes quickly.
Things I don’t care for:
The seat provided is plastic, hollow underneath and seems flimsy, and also has a tendency to need to be retightened often.
Water only washes down the front of the bowl. So, if any toilet paper sticks to the sides, or back of the bowl it will not wash down on its own.
My home is over 110 years old and the toilet is located on the second floor. While there were some concerns over the toilet’s ability to keep the sewer line open with such a small amount of water, this is something to be mindful of, should you decide to install it. I have not personally had a problem with this issue at all, as the horizontal run from my toilet to the main is much less than 20 feet (the recommended max).
