It is no secret that Johnny Depp is a mega star, but as of late he hasn’t really delivered anything that really stands out. His latest film Transcendence takes him away from the over the top wacky characters he has become known for and looks to send him back into a smarter role. With a supporting cast including Rebecca Hall, Paul Bettany, Cillian Murphy, Morgan Freeman, Cole Hauser, Kate Mara, Clifton Collins Jr, and Josh Stewart could this film be a return to the Depp fans grew to love or will it be deleted before being able to fully upload?

Transcendence follows the foremost researcher in the field of Artificial Intelligence, working to create a sentient machine that combines the collective intelligence of everything ever known with the full range of human emotions. His highly controversial experiments have made him famous, but they have also made him the prime target of anti-technology extremists who will do whatever it takes to stop him. However, in their attempt to destroy him, they inadvertently become the catalyst for him to succeed to be a participant in his own transcendence but as his thirst for knowledge evolves into a seemingly omnipresent quest for power, the only thing that is becoming terrifyingly clear is there may be no way to stop him. The idea behind this movie fits perfect in today’s concerns with growing technology and while it works on some levels, there are numerous missteps that could kill it for some viewers. The story itself is great and while the trailers led it to look like one that could easily not make any sense, it surprisingly worked great. At the same time there are elements to the execution that fumbles around a bit.

The first half of the movie is intriguing and lends itself to be heading in a great direction and while it still does, there is way too many people willing to just jump right on board with little argument. Bettany’s character seems to be the only one thinking clearly about this, but at the same time pretty quickly jumps right in bed with a terrorist group. This group was the biggest issue in the film as they are supposed to be fighting against technology yet they seem to be more interested in killing people, which they kill a lot of right off the bat and everyone seems to be fine with joining up with them. After a strong start, the film suffers a from some pacing issues for a while that feels like they are forcing way too much unnecessary aspects that could have been trimmed and made for a better film. The performances were all fine, despite some of the actors, including Freeman who are underused and only serve to attempt to humanize Depp before he stops being human.

While it is a bit far-fetched and is reminiscent of the film Lawnmower Man the sci-fi aspect makes it still work even though the first half and second half feel like two different films. This is one of those films that will work for some and miss the mark completely with others and will all depend on what you expect from the film. Despite the issues with the film it still manages to entertain thanks to the great cast and interesting direction. It’s been a while since a sci-fi film like this has come along and while it is far from perfect it is still worth checking out. The biggest thing going for it is getting a chance to see Depp get back to acting and while this may not be one his strong performances that made him a star, it is at least not another silly over the top stereotypes he has become known for.

In addition to the film this Blu-ray also showcases numerous special features including featurettes, trailers and more. Become more than human when Transcendence comes to Blu-ray and DVD on July 22nd.
