A few months ago air conditioning was something you knew you’d be without when attending a show at Detroit’s Saint Andrew’s Hall. But for many thankful fans who prefer not to be dripping sweat for the entire length of a concert, air conditioning was recently installed and going full blast on Thursday night.
The place was actually pretty dang cold when the doors opened, but as soon as alt-pop outfit WALK THE MOON took the stage and the crowd started jumping, dancing, clapping, and cheering, the venue was filled with almost as much heat as sound.
The Cincy-based foursome never disappoints. Their tunes are incredibly upbeat and ridiculously infectious, and if the music itself wasn’t enough to get someone moving their live energy should do it.
From drummer Sean Waugaman and bassist Kevin Ray to guitarist Eli Maiman and frontman Nicholas Petricca, every band member carries their weight in crazy awesome energy. But something special is to be said about Petricca; not only is he incredibly enthusiastic but he puts energy into his vocals. The frontman sings with intense passion and he sings hard; but his voice is also very lovely and he has great control over it.
As for the rest of the band, Maiman is such a talented guitarist; he shreds on his Fender Telecaster and clearly loves what he does. Ray is clearly a fan favorite and smiles a lot, which is always something I love to see. Waugaman was a bit hidden towards the back of the stage, but he was up on a drum riser and rightfully so; he is one awesome drummer.
A band wouldn’t be anywhere without their fans, and the crowd at Saint Andrew’s was filled with some of the best fans a band could ask for. Although someone hit Petricca in the face with a bracelet everyone in the crowd was very responsive, clapping and swaying and singing along, and cheering the band back onstage for an encore.
Magic Man opened the show and they were the perfect opener. Very similar to WALK THE MOON; high energy with infectious, upbeat alt-pop tunes and a very passionate frontman. Look out for them in the future!
Overall it was a very happy and fun atmosphere at Saint Andrew's on Thursday. Don't miss your chance to see WALK THE MOON when they come to a city near you!
