The Friends of the Arthur R Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge sponsored the Second Annual Juried Art Contest, Loxahatchee Visions, which began on November 13, 2011. On Sunday, November 20, the Awards Reception was held in the Visitor Center. Art Professor Terryl Best Lawrence reviewed the winning entries, and Friends President Stephen Horowitz presented the awards.
The beautiful exhibit of Loxahatchee-inspired wildlife and landscape paintings consists of thirty-two 2-dimensional works by eighteen artists (no photographs as a photo contest will take place later in the winter). Entries were judged on technical excellence, originality, creativity, visual impact, and artistic merit. Jessica Amaral, MA in Fine Art and Instructor at Palm Beach State College and Nova Southeastern University juried the show along with Terryl Best Lawrence, EdD in Fine Art, Instructor Digital Media Arts College and Florida Atlantic University.
First Place went to Stan Dornfest, the subject of a previous Examiner article, for his powerful painting “Welcoming Dusk.” Frank Ramano received the Second Place Award for his engaging “Raccoon,” and Tykie Ganz won Third Place for her super realistic owl, “Here’s Looking at You Kid.” Honorable mentions went to Holly Rutchey for “The Night Watch”, Deb LaFogg Docherty for “Illumination,” and Randy Grabo for “Afterglow.”
All entries will remain on display and available for sale until January 8, 2012. Artwork may be purchased with cash, credit card, or checks made payable to Friends of Loxahatchee, which is a charitable 501c3 organization, and a portion of any works sold will be donated to the Friends. This long holiday weekend is perfect for visiting the Refuge, so while you’re there make a point of seeing Visions. The Visitor Center is open daily 9-4 except Thanksgiving and Christmas.
