Syrah isn’t a grape often associated with Italy. Tuscan winemakers who broke the mold by bringing in non-native grape varietals have experimented with these grapes for decades. Villa Pillo winery that traces its roots backs for several centuries in Tuscany’s Chianti Region.
The wine makers at Villa Pillo source grapes from three vineyards to produce its Syrah. Their Villa Pillo, Syrah, Toscana, IGT, 2011 is deep purple in color. It has aromas of strawberries, blueberries, black pepper and wet earth. Tart red berries are up front in the palate and black pepper comes through next. Smooth but firm tannins and nice acidity lead to a long finish.
Enjoy this wine with roasted pork or even barbeque. This wine has lots of flavors that pair well with foods that are highly spiced.
