If you missed The History Channels series "Vikings," it has hit shelves on Blu-ray and it's hot.
Starring Travis Fimmel as Viking Ragnar Lodrok, a hard drinking, hard fighting viking who wants to be more than a farmer. (Lodrok is thought to be a fictional character. He was a very popular Norse hero. History lesson over.)
In season one, the audience is schooled about the violent raids of the East. Ragnar's family is shown with his son given the right of passage to become a man. Wife, Lagertha, is a warrior in her own right. She desperately wants to go on a trip to the West, but even female warriors have to take care of the kids.
Earl Haraldson, who rules with an iron fist is offended when Ragnar speaks up during a court session of sorts and suggests they plunder to the West. He is quickly shut down and warned to never speak of the West again, there is no land in the direction. The Earl has Ragnar watched.
There is land to the West, of course, and Ragnar with his ship built by a very strange, but brilliant character named Floki, some brave men and a big dream go and find the land and plunder a monastery of it's golden religious items.
With a major side story running about tension between Ragnar and his cutthroat brother, Rollo, "Vikings" is a contender to be a top series for The History Channel.
Season two with nine episodes has already been ordered and fans seem happy about that.
The reason for buying Blu-ray is two-fold; picture quality, interactive ability and some kick-ass extras.
- Deleted scenes
- Audio commentary on selected episodes. If you don't play the commentary, it's a shame. There is so much interesting backstage information told by the people who know all about the filming of the show.
- A warrior society: Viking culture and justice.
- Birth of the vikings.
- Forging the viking army: Warfare and tactics.
