The city of Fort Smith is known for a lot of different things: a rich Western history, a legacy in manufacturing and an eclectic dining scene. That dining scene includes many Vietnamese restaurants. The reason for the large number is that Fort Smith is home to many Vietnamese refugees that came to the United States following the fall of Saigon in 1975. The refugees were brought to Fort Chaffee, and elected to remain once they were released. These new citizens brought a style of dining that many in Fort Smith had not seen at the time, and it was inevitable that some would open restaurants. One of the best Vietnamese restaurants in Fort Smith is Pho Hoang which is located at 2111 Grand Avenue.
Pho (pronounced “Fu”) Hoang has been serving delicious Vietnamese style cuisine for several years. What separates them from some of the other Asian restaurants is that they do not offer a buffet. Pho Hoang is reminiscent of the take-out restaurants that are popular around the New York City area. The food is made to order so no one has to worry about eating something that has been sitting around for several hours. This examiner tried the Mi Hoanh Thanh. This dish is a clear soup served with pork wonton, shrimp, imitation crab and vegetables. The soup is priced at $6.95 for a small bowl, yet is still a good value for the money. The reason is that even a small bowl is large enough to accommodate a hearty appetite.
For those who are looking for a quiet place for a meal, Pho Hoang will suit the bill nicely. The small dining room is a perfect place for a quiet lunch or a romantic dinner. The waitstaff is attentive, but not to the point that carrying on a conversation is impossible. Fort Smith has many Asian restaurants and even several Vietnamese restaurants, but none can match the simplicity of Pho Hoang.
Pho Hoang is open from Monday-Sunday 9:30 a.m. - 9 p.m. For more information or to place an order please call 479-785-1779.
