Rock and roll is supposed to be shocking. It's supposed to be primal and monstrous. And death metal - well, times 1,000.
So it makes perfect sense for death metal artists to give their take on the holiday season. Fact of the matter is that not everyone is in love with this time of year. That's not to say all metal heads hate Christmas, quite the contrary, but for those who want to express a different take on it then death metal is the way to go.
The song "O Come, O Come Azrael (O Come, O Come, Emmanuel)" Hrubovcak's "yule tirade," is part of the Death Metal Christmas - Hellish Renditions Of Christmas Classics collection.
"At this point, Azrael is fully self-actualized but the lyrics to this one don't address the story as much as the other songs. Instead, this song serves as more of an invocation. The guitars in the beginning and middle are designed as a swallowing force to sink the mind into the meditative subconscious and create complete focus for the invocation. This song is basically an anthem for misanthropes everywhere! So turn out the lights, break out the candles and sing - REJOICE!" explains Hrubovcak in a press release.
The video for "O Come, O Come Azrael" is simple but powerful, and its a lyric video - which is always helpful with death metal anyway. Hrubovcak could have gone much further to make an outrageous video that shocks and awes, but instead he lets the lyrics convey the emotion...and destroy.
