Legendary writer Neil Gaiman returns to Vertigo with his first Sandman story in 10 years with the six issue series The Sandman: Overture. The Sandman series kicked off over 20 years ago, but never told the origin of Morpheus until now.
The Sandman: Overture tells the story from the birth of a galaxy to the moment that Morpheus is captured and according to Gaiman himself will finally reveal the secrets to the Endless. Clearly this book is geared towards those long time fans of the hit series, but this book plays fairly well for someone walking in with little to no knowledge. There are aspects that remain a bit confusing, but thanks to Gaiman’s always brilliant writing it will still engage you into the story and keep you informed just enough to want to continue. For those fans, this book opens the doors to many questions and continues to deliver what made the series such a huge hit to begin with. The visuals take you on a hypnotic acid trip journey through this strange other world and does a brilliant job bringing Gaiman’s unique storytelling to life. This book sports some of the most interesting character designs and universe that makes it stand leaps and bounds above other books.
If there is any issue this book holds it is the confusion of not knowing the back story if you have never read it. Thankfully this can easily be rectified by checking out the varied collected editions or back issues, but if you dive head first into this book blindly you will still find yourself mesmerized by the brilliance of it all.
