One word: Gorgeous.
The new Beauty Ballroom, obviously related to the good ol Beauty Bar downtown, is opening for business today (1/27) with a huge show, but opened up last night to a lucky handful of Austinites for a preview party.
Located on 2015 E Riverside, the new venue backs up to also recently opened Emo's East and has tons of convenient and free parking. There may be some conflict when both venues are hosting a show, but surely that will be resolved and figured out with time.
Plastered with the bright pink neon the bar franchise is known for, the building looks pretty standard on the surface, but once inside its a different story. The walls are full of mod designs and fully covered in glitter, and the multiple levels make the place feel huge. Two big bars will hopefully enough to accommodate the sure to be huge crowds this venue will start to see. The hardwood floors are a great touch and should provide to be a great dance floor. The stage itself is so well placed that nearly any spot in the venue will give you some view of the performer, and the upstairs balconies (yes, balconies) may be the best spots in the house. A good sized patio is found in front of the venue with a handful of cafe style chairs and tables that are sure to be populated as the weather starts to warm up.
Not only will this be a great venue for most types of music (the sound is great; loved seeing Mother Falcon up there), but the plan is for the bar to be open regardless of whether a show is scheduled. As of now however, it is just open on show-to-show basis.
The vibe is great. Some are concerned that the venue might not make it because of its distance from the much-loved Red River scene, but the look and feel of the venue should eliminate those misgivings. Ticket prices are affordable, which is so refreshing to see from a new venue, so there are no excuses to miss out this experience! Consider heading over next week sometime; there are shows every night February 1st-4th starting as low as $5 a ticket.
