You might be surprised when you hear Vanessa Perea for the first time as I was. She has the ability to sing songs of different styles effortlessly including Brazilian and North American standards. She is not from Brazil. She was born in New Jersey to parents of Cuban and Colombian descent. Her latest album is titled Soulful Days and it features Perea's strong voice and powerful range.
She is backed up by Robert Edwards on trombone, Matt Jodrell on trumpet, Dave Lantz on piano, Dylan Shamat on bass and Evan Sherman on drums. All the musicians are terrific on this CD and they really give this album great energy. Some of the notable songs include; Who Can I Turn To, December Blue which is a Cedar Walton tune, Celia a Bud Powell tune, Triste is a song written by Antonio Carlos Jobim and Luz Do Sol.
Vanessa Penea has graced the stage with the likes of James Moody, Charles McPherson, George Cables, Randy Brecker and Jimmy Heath. That is really great company indeed. This album is scheduled for release on July 8, 2014. I certainly hope that this will be the first of many more from Vanessa Penea.
