Value of art and vagaries of friendship explored in entertaining ‘Art’

Currently performing at the Pasadena Playhouse Yasmina Reza’s Art explores the value of art and vagaries of friendship in a highly entertaining production which opened on Sunday, January 29, 2012. Director David Lee used his considerable skill to elicit both the comedy and the drama from his talented, well-matched cast, Roger Bart, Michael O’Keefe and Bradley Whitford.

Fissures appear in long-time friendships when Serge (O’Keefe) spends a ridiculous amount of money on a white canvas by an “ultra fashionable” modern painter. Marc’s (Whitford) indignation would be even more profound in today’s economic climate than when the play was written in 1998.  Skirting the issue, Yvan (Bart) straddles the fence to avoid conflict between his two best friends.

Preoccupied in invitation issues regarding his impending nuptials Bart (in a tour de force moment) steals the scene with Yvan’s manic monologue as he attempts to explain his late arrival for the “boys” night out.

Whitford and O’Keefe take advantage of their many moments to shine, as well.

On the surface the rift appears to be about artistic tastes but it is more a metaphor for the pinions and meaning of friendship.

All of this plays out with the actors’ consummate skill completely inhabiting their characters, often with great hilarity, in this brisk 90-minute production.

Author of the recent hit God of Carnage Reza’s script is dense and intricate as it explores very human themes of what binds people together and threatens to tear them apart.

Enhancing this satisfying theatrical experience is the exquisite set by Tom Buderwitz (one of L.A.’s treasures) and elegant lighting design by Jared A. Sayeg.
