"Monty Python: A Chronology, 1969-2012," is the second edition of Douglas McCall's exhaustive research book on the Monty Python troupe. It is even more detailed than the 1991 first release. McCall offers chronological lists and complete credits and details for every Monty Python episode, film, and every offshoot in which any of the actors participated. Even libraries and research centers who already have the first edition are recommended to purchase this update as it contains a wealth of important information that has transpired in the careers of these talented men over the past two decades.
While the author does not attempt to offer assessment or discussion about the episodes, the importance of this book is as a reference work that not only includes statistics, but broader and more encompassing information for each program. For each episode of "Monty Python's Flying Circus," McCall gives us a list of the sketches, discerns which opening is utilized and how it may be different from other episodes, and information on when sketches are recorded for later use on other programs. Live appearances are included as well, allowing us to see a clear trajectory as to the troupes development from journeyman comedians to cult heroes, to established international stars.
In an era where too many are relying on the internet to ferret out information, Douglas McCall's latest tome is a good example of how a wealth of detailed and complete information can be found within the covers of a book.
