When Underworld Awakening previews first aired nationwide of the end of last year 2011 its plot story indicated that the supernatural community of Vampires and Lycans where expose to humanity and immediately created a great "purge" on both immortals. Yesterday (Sunday, January 29, 2012) observation of the Sci-Fi/Drama/Action Pack/Thriller 'Awakening' indicated a montage of recaps in the beginning of the movie previous story line of Underworld. As audience remember that Corvinus character (played by Derek Jacobi) from Underworld Evolution gave a gift to the original death dealer Selene (Kathryn Bailey Beckinsale) ascending her as a "Day-Walker" (like Blade character from Marvel Comics). The movie begins somewhere in the time-frame after second Underworld movie left off where now is the pedicle axis point of exposure for both species (Vamps and Wolfs) and give no choice for Selene to run away from law authority. An incident come to pass that leads Selene and Michael in the ocean where special task force take advantage and crystallize both of them into ice with a nitrogen grenade. When awaken from cryogenic suspension hibernation in a blink of an eye twelve years have pass since that incident making Beckinsale character senses under normal condition a heartless destroying anything/one on her path as a survival tool for self-preservation. Sadly, Michael character does not have much air time in this coming movie of 'Awakening' (only in the beginning and nearly in the end of the movie). He is portrayed by a different unknown actor of the reason that his name was not even mention on the end of the credits, but possibly air in the begging of the movie credits. I’m not sure and won’t be sure until viewing the movie again.
The movies overview fluctuates of the reason that the previews of the supernatural action/horror franchise indicate that human hunts the Lycans and Vampires and brings a new war into the mix. Since the war between this two covenants swear vengeances to one another along time ago it made me believe it was going to be an all-out-war between these three species now; Human vs Vampires vs Lycans. Making the audience believe that Vampires will fight Lycans & Humans, Lycans will recruit specific humans and kill vampires & humans, and humans will kill anything supernatural for survival. But that is not the case in this movie, yes, is true that humanity in this movie has taking population control to the extreme of a possible outbreak between this two species, but the plot of the movie in personal opinion is base on the safety on a young girl name Eve (played by India Eisley) who is only referred to as "Subject two" in dialogue, a hybrid Vampire/Lycan, daughter of Selene & Michael Corvin character, and last descendent of the Alexander Corvinus family.
Keep in mind that the first two previews Underworld movies held a true point of credible tale of the mythology of Vampires & Werewolves and even the third movie which didn’t feature Kate still had a very strong plot-line. Since this new movie had a big gap of years to come up with a great new storyline, getting the actors or should I say actor of the franchise with some new comers to add in between, the story line itself was just basic, and was a misleading stratagem. The movie in personal opinion should of just been called "Underworld: Chronicles of Awakening" because is just a survival for the supernatural community after a new age revelation have been brought to attention on humanity eyes.
Is this an indication that this movie was terrible to see? Let me put your mind at ease and simple say "NO!" Only certain things should gone in a different direction; adding one more word in the tile of the movie, the way it was described in the preview plot storyline, and extending thirty more minutes to the movie would of been great. That’s it. Because truly is an action base sci-fy thriller of entertainment that reveals a new wondering aspect of Vampire and Lycans. For example, when Kathryn character (Selene) topple a moving normal massive van (like Arnold Schwarzenegger did in the movieTerminator 3: Rise of the Machines) it specify to the audience a glimpse of how powerful one soul vampire or should I say soulless vampire truly is, and in the process making the audience wonder how power a Lycan is since werewolves mythology indicate they have true brute force when transformation occurs. Also to add it has wonderful 3D special effects that enhances the movie objects when flying material take place directly on the big movie screen, the graphics are compile fantastic when transformation of Lycans turns them into beast type creature, and the performance Kate is as beautiful as she look (she defiantly owns this role), and to top it off in some part of the movie make the audience feel as part of a video game scenario when defeating enemies that come all over that place to set scene for the more bigger miner battle boss. All in all this is not a terrible movie, but it does leave the audience wanting more since the movie is less than 90 min. If pure action Sci-fy violence is something that is craving in your system than definitely this movie is for you.
To recap:
