This weekend, Tampa was home to the beginning of a new fitness trend—Underground Yoga Lifestyle. Underground Yoga Lifestyle is a new format of yoga fused with dance, meditation, and other exercise modalities to bring healing to the body through movement. With mood lighting and a live DJ delivering a mesmerizing electronic sound, the participant is able to transcend their perceived limitations, like shyness, embarrassment, or feelings of inadequacy, to move their bodies in ways they never imagined.
The dance portion of the form is a modern, interpretive dance that allows the student to release their emotion and feel empowered. The yoga portion is healing through strengthening and stretching. The meditation allows for total relaxation of the body, mind, and soul.
While the fitness industry wasn’t Luis Rosarios first choice of career fields, he brings his technological knowledge and DJ background to the field beautifully. His freestyling of some of the grooves in the background track for the workshop this weekend led to some beautiful music—both coming from the speakers and in the spirit of the participants.
Those in the fitness industry will recognize the other co-founder of Underground Yoga Lifestyle, Michelle LeMay. Michelle has been in the fitness industry for approximately three decades and has been on the cutting edge of fitness movements in the past. Her love of dance led to the first hip hop aerobics videos on the market and now she is on the cutting edge once more with her fusion of yoga and dance.
Underground Yoga Lifestyle is taught as seven modules, each building on the knowledge gained in the previous. Module one was hosted at the Shapes Total Fitness in Palm Harbor on Saturday, laying the foundation for future certification for the participants. It may not be well known yet, but once those in attendance at module one finish their journey through the seven layers of certification, it looks to be a big hit at local gyms. Once it is available in your area, you should take it to feel the freedom of movement, both physically and mentally.
More information about Underground Yoga Lifestyle can be found at www.groovetemple.tv. Be sure to watch for the various modules as they are presented around the country, for they are the future of fitness.
