Sears Home Services' 'Building Community Together'

The smell of saw dust, fresh paint, mulch; the help of volunteers and a surprise visit of Ty Pennington himself were just a few key elements at the Sears Home Services' "Building Community Together" kick off in Tampa, Fla. today.

The early afternoon kick off was at the corner of Lamar and E. Palm Ave. where Sears Home Services volunteers, technicians, and community leaders gathered for brief acknowledgements. Then it was up to DIY, former Extreme Make Over Home Edition TV series star and TV personality Ty Pennington's final cheer on phrase, "Let's do it," to continue with the on going project at the former Presbyterian Church built in the 1900s. The abandoned church is being converted into the new Tampa Heights Junior Civic Association Community Center that will serve approximately 200 children by teaching computer skills, encouraging healthy eating habits, providing other learning opportunities and more.

Ty Pennington expressed his enthusiasm to be a part of the project.

What I think is amazing about the "Building Community Together" initiative is that you have local people helping to improve the lives of their neighbors. I am so excited to be part of this effort and help kick things off. Hopefully, this will inspire people around the country to volunteer in their communities and support what Sears Home Services is doing.

In early January students from USF's SOS started working on a new ramp, irrigation system, and new garden plots for the community center. Rebuilding Together Tampa Bay (RTTB), along with other sponsors, teamed up with Tampa Heights Junior Civic Association (THJrCA) to finish construction at the center where painting, planting, and assembly of furnishings continued throughout the day.

In addition, about 80 volunteers from Sears Home Services are donating their time to participate in the renovation not only of the church but also of three local homes. In conjunction with Sears Home Services "Building Community Together" launch, it also announced February as National Hiring Month at which the team is looking to fill more than 1,000 product repair service technician, project consultant, call center support, and various home improvement positions nationwide.

Sears Home Services mission is to restore homes and buildings in the communities in which their nearly 8,000 technicians, project consultants and contractors live and serve and along with the nonprofit Rebuilding Together organization which helps identify homes and community projects in need of assistance. Apart from Tampa, the "Building Community Together" initiative will continue in other communities including the Chicago, Sacramento, and Philadelphia areas.
