Tropical Plant Industry Exhibition 2013 (Photos)

The Florida Nursery, Growers and Landscape Association had their 40th Anniversary show this week at the Broward County Convention Center in Fort Lauderdale. This is an international show with suppliers from A to Z displaying everything from all plants imaginable to benches, greenhouses, soils, containers, labels and so much more.

Hot trends for 2013 are hearty new plant varieties. The show participants get to pick their favorites to be announced at a later date. Last year’s winners have just begun to appear in the general market. Vertical gardens are still trending as well as hydroponic supplies. Miniature gardens are growing in popularity. Eco friendly companies publicizing their methods of growing plants without as much toxic runoff and utilizing integrated pest management to cut down on chemical usage. Many of the top nurseries continue to dominate the show.

East Marsh Nursery has been in business fifty two years, long before the tropical foliage business bloomed in the late 1970’s. Originally located on a parcel of land east of US highway 1 near the airport, they moved many years ago to a western location due to airport expansion. According to Lynn, her parents Jerry and Louise Soowal started the nursery way back in 1961. Jerry “was an innovator, with visions to revolutionize the growing industry in exporting both large and small plants overseas using refrigerated shipping containers.” According to Lynn. He developed very tall shade houses and is the grandfather of the interiorscape business. “ He trademarked the phrase “acclimatized foliage” and truly changed the face of the nursery industry.” Lynn explained. This show is a must for those in the plant industry, students and those who want to become involved in the tropical plant and landscape industry.
