Tricia's retro film review: MacKenna's Gold

MacKenna’s Gold is the 1969 western starring Gregory Peck. He plays Marshal MacKenna, who stumbles onto a treasure map that attracts the attention of gang leader Colorado. He kidnaps both MacKenna and a woman named Inga and then forces them to lead him to the gold. Several people happen to join them, hoping to grab the gold. MacKenna tries to get help from the US Calvary, only to have them get “gold fever” too. Will they be able to find the gold and make it back to civilization alive?

This is a very busy film, not only does MacKenna have to deal with an outlaw group that includes an old flame of his; he also has a group following him hoping to find the legendary Apache gold. The movie is still pretty good as the film makers realized that it needed to be a three hour epic. The twist that a US Calvary soldier would kill his own men to get the gold is plausible, since even soldiers can become greedy. While it’s your standard western, it’s still entertaining. Honolulu western fans should watch this movie.
