Jet Pilot is the 1957 action film starring John Wayne. He plays Col. Jim Shannon, who rounds up a Russian defector who happens to be a female pilot. Both he and Lt. Anna fall in love and marry quickly so she won’t be deported. However, it turns out that she’s actually Capt. Olga, sent to spy on the Americans. They decide to play along and allow Jim to escape with Olga to the USSR. The Russians seemingly accept him as the young couple’s relationship hits a rocky mark. Olga finds out that they’ve been pumping him full of truth drugs in order to get information. Will she stay loyal to her country or her new husband?
While not a bad movie, there is one glaring flaw. The actress who plays Captain Olga never bothered to learn how to speak with a Russian accent. It makes the movie look bad and may led viewers to wonder if Olga really is a Russian citizen. The story is fine though, and blends action and romance well. While it’s there to make America look good, it’s understandable since the living conditions in the USSR were quite poor. Interestingly John Wayne plays a character who needs help in the end. Despite the acting problems, Honolulu film fans should at least rent it.
