Batman and Robin (1949)

Batman and Robin is the 1949 serial based on the Batman comics. Bruce and Dick have moved to the suburbs. However, crime never sleeps, so they continue to be Batman and Robin in order to fight crime. Vicki Vale tags along, hoping to find out who Batman is. This time, they battle a menace known as the Wizard. Vicki’s brother, Jimmie, is a part of the Wizard’s gang, but sacrifices himself to save his sister. All signs point to Professor Emil as the Wizard. But fate will take a strange turn and reveal who the Wizard really is.

Although it is an average serial, at least it doesn’t have any nasty racial implications like the first one. The idea that Bruce and Dick would move to the suburbs is amusing and probably reflects the real life migration of families to the burbs. The twist that the twin brother of Professor Emil’s servant is actually the Wizard is genuinely surprising, since we were lead to believe that Emil was the Wizard. Vicki Vale’s subplot is heartbreaking and adds some emotional weight to the movie. Honolulu Batman fans should rent this film.
