Batman is the 1943 film serial based on the famous Batman comic. It’s World War II and Japanese spy Dr. Tito Daka wants to get his hands on a radium gun. He has men turned into “zombies” and agents to do his bidding. The dynamic duo quickly wages war on Dr. Daka. Complicating things is that one of the zombies is actually the uncle of Linda Page, who happens to be Bruce Wayne’s fiancée. Can Batman stop Dr. Daka and save Linda’s uncle from a fate worse than death?
While the serial is decent, there is a nasty core underneath. Not only is it implied that the Japanese are cruel monsters, it even says that the interment of the Japanese Americans was a good thing. This Batman is quite different from today’s version, so people who prefer a darker Batman may not like the serial. They may even be more surprised that Alfred is used as comic relief. Racist propaganda mars what is otherwise a decent serial. Honolulu Batman fans need to rent it first.
