Backfire is the 1950 film noir. Bob Corey and Steve Connolly are veterans who plan to open a ranch. Bob is badly injured and has one more surgery to go. However, his friend Steve is injured. What’s worse, the police claim that he murdered a criminal named Solly Blayne the same time he supposedly got injured. Corey investigates and finds out that Connelly fell in love with a woman named Lysa whom Lou Walsh, a gambler also loved. When he finds out that she loves Steve he injures him. Can Bob find his friend before it’s too late?
It’s a pretty good film noir but a little unusual. In other film of this type Steve would have been killed instead of being held prisoner. Some people might suspect the Hays Code at work. But it may also be Lou’s thinking that keeping Steve an invalid is a better punishment than just killing him. Still, there’s a nice touch of realism as the movie shows the plight of returning veterans. The movie is still worth watching. Honolulu film noir fans should see this film.
