Tricia's Retro Film Review: Another Thin Man

Another Thin Man is the third film in the Nick and Nora Charles series. Nora has just given birth to Nick Jr. and the couple has returned to New York. Nick is approached by Colonel Burr McFay who invites him to his house. It seems that he has been receiving death threats and wants Nick to investigate. When they arrive, McFay is murdered and the main suspect Phil Church disappears. Nick chases him down and finds out about Phil’s seedy lifestyle. He finds out that Nick is trailing him and demands that he stop or else. However, during a rooftop chase, Church is killed. Nick is not worried, because he found out that Church didn’t kill McFay. In fact, he knows who the real killer is. If it’s not Phil Church, then who is it?

The Thin Man series continues to deliver another enjoyable movie. The snappy writing continues to sparkle as Nick and Nora quip about the mystery. It helps that the movie is allowed to stand on its own two feet by not referencing the first two movies. The screenwriters do miss an opportunity to delve more into Nick and Nora’s parenthood. It would have been funny to see them muddle through the experience of raising a child at the same time as Nick is investigating a murder. The mystery itself is well done, as it turns out that the real murderer is the so-called “good girl” who felt smothered by her ordained role. It’s a plot twist that Dashiell Hammett would have approved of. Honolulu mystery fans should add this movie to their collection.
