Whales Belly defies expectations in many ways and the stunning combination of their extraordinary 9-course set dinner and their playful yet sophisticated venue make for a magical experience you won’t soon forget. From now until the end of November you can treat yourself to an unforgettable 9 course culinary adventure for $62.33USD (1950Baht)++ per person. If you would like to opt for a 3 –course wine pairing to your meal, just add an additional $38.35USD (1200Baht)++ per person. The cuisine is described as “Modernist European” and Chef Mai, who trained at the award winning Le Normandie Bangkok, is sure to win you over with his delightfully innovative and delectable cuisine.
Inspired by the beloved fairy tale “The Adventures of Pinocchio”, Whales Belly is undoubtedly original. Located in a strip Mall on Sukhumvit Soi 39, it can be a bit of an adventure just finding the place. But it’s well worth the effort as you step into their sumptuous restaurant. With a sophisticated navy blue and gold color scheme, the first thing that strikes you is the avant-garde wood trellises that hang from the ceiling and dominate the room. Ivory in color and curved to mimic the rib cage of a whale it is a breathtaking centerpiece that sets the stage for your dining experience. Rather than being kitch, the overall vibe is quite elegant and there is a rigid formality to the service that is mitigated by the sultry techno jazz that plays on the sound system. In addition to the set dinner menu, Whales Belly offers an eclectic array of seafood, steaks, pastas and salads that can be enjoyed every day for lunch or dinner and is affordably priced between $15.98USD (500Baht) and $25.57USD (800Baht) per entree with several options priced even lower.
The meal begins with a Bread & Butter course made all the more special by the addition of a complimentary free-range Chicken Liver Pâté w/ Cognac. The soft white and wheat bread is warm, the pate is smooth and creamy and it is a delightful way to begin the meal. Next is an amuse-bouche of raw salmon. The bite size Salmon Tart is fresh and bright with pleasant hints of lemon and dill. Next I was offered a perfectly seared Hokkaido Scallop w/ Fresh Pomodoro Gazpacho & Extra Virgin Olive Oil Snow. This is a subtle offering as the sweet scallop is matched perfectly with the tartness of the diced apple and the bright tomato gazpacho. The olive oil powder is a molecular achievement of the highest level as it morphs from powder and adds richness to the dish as it dissolves. Next up is the amazing Volcano of Bluefin Tuna w/ Fresh Avocado, Miso-Orange Sauce & Lime Zest This is a stunningly accomplished dish that offers a powerhouse of bold flavors despite its subtle appearance. The “volcano sauce” is bursting with delightful citrus notes, while the cool and refreshing avocado and tuna make an evocative foundation. Arguably my favorite dish is the “62°c Onsen Tamago” which is a 1.5 hours Soude-vide Egg w/ Shiitake Mushroom, Bacon Ragu & Beurre Blanc Sauce. This dish is unforgettable as the presentation is remarkable, and the overall “umptuous” runny egg and rich sauce is pure indulgence. The addition of seaweed takes it to the next level and it is completely satisfying without ever feeling like eating a breakfast dish despite its classic egg and bacon components. The Mc’n Cheese Ravioli Duo of Herbs Chicken & Fresh Cheese stuffing/ Espagnole & Parmesan Cheese Sauce is the next course and it is a unique homemade pasta with a two different filling in each ravioli. This is hearty comfort food that still remains quite elegant. The final savory course is the Slow Braised Wagyu Beef Cheek w/ Black Garlic, Cognac & Black Peppercorn Sauce. The beef is so tender it just melts in your mouth and the potatoes are downright addictive. For dessert I was presented with the Miel Pommes Confit of Madagascar Vanilla Ice Cream w/ Raspberry Sauce. Light and refreshing, it was the perfect dessert as it was neither too sweet nor heavy. The Mocha Coffee is the final course and proves to be a perfect end to a stellar meal. If that is not enough for you, feel free to add two additional courses to the set menu such as the Lobster Themindor for $31.96USD(1000Baht)++ and the Sous-vide Lamb Loin & 12-hour Lamb Belly for an extra $19.17USD (600Baht).
The 9-course set dinner is an experience that anyone who appreciates the art of dining should have. All of the dishes presented displayed a magnificent diversity while remaining surprisingly cohesive. Every dish was successful and the progression of lighter to heavier dishes was quite masterful. I could not help but be impressed with the high level of artistry and the seemingly effortless complexity of flavor on the plate. Chef Mai is another delight as he is engaging and personable and very passionate about the cuisine. With their great service, terrific food and unique venue, Whales Belly makes every day dining a special occasion.
