Endless baskets of chips and salsa, strong margaritas, and the smell of freshly made tortillas permeating the air are the tell tale signs of a Mexican restaurant. With so many Mexican restaurants in San Diego, there can no be definitive “best” one out of them all, but if in Del Mar there is a new contender for the title and its name is Casa Sol y Mar. A good rule of thumb for most Mexican restaurants is that if it smells authentic, then that is a good sign, although not a reliable indication of quality.
The brightly decorated interiors and mariachi band meandering around dining patrons, singing as they go reflect the true spirit of Mexico and make the experience much more authentic. The patio seating adds to the appeal of the restaurant, as it is a nice option for patrons and even more so as the summer heat begins to fade into a cool fall. The food at Casa Sol y Mar is not particularly anything unique, but the common staples seen in most Mexican restaurants are pretty solid flavor wise.
The main differentiating factor between Casa Sol y Mar's menu and others of Mexican food specialty is the indication of heart healthy, gluten-free, and vegetarian items. Dishes such as the fiesta fajitas, or ensalada tropical are some of the standout dishes with these indicators. The same flavors found in traditional dishes, but with a modern spin in presentation, Casa Sol y Mar has found a niche in the health conscience scene.
Although there are limitless options of burritos, quesadillas, enchiladas, etc. for those wanting the whole experience, and at less than $15 a dish, the experience could be pretty cheap.
This is a place where meals can be shared and memories created when one allows the warmth and romance of the restaurant to transport them to a different kind of home.
