Forget the high-low skirt or dress, forget sky-high wedges, and you can even forget those incredibly adorable sparkly sandals you just bought the other day. The biggest and most important summer essential is a tan.
Living in Glendale, the beach is just around the corner -- OK a 20 minute corner, but you get the idea. But wait! There is no need to lay out in the sun for hours while your skin boils to a golden tan. If you're anything like me, it may even take days to get that J-Lo glow you oh, so deserve.
Your next option may be a tanning bed where you walk out looking like an oompa loompa. There is no guarantee that a tanning bed or even a spray tan won't turn you orange -- most places use a solution made from carrots! If turning orange doesn't bother you, a tanning bed is said to be equivalent to about three to five times the amount of UV rays as you would get laying in the sun. That just screams skin cancer.
Don't worry beautiful people, you can still glow without all of the hassle of getting to the beach, ruining your skin and turning orange. The solution is Xen-Tan.
I have been using Xen-Tan products for the last two years -- they even have an E! Live from the Red Carpet tanner to get you ready for any huge event. My favorite is the Dark Lotion Absolute Luxe. Not only does it go on absolutely even without any of that self-tanning scent, it stays on after you shower. Most Xen-Tan products have a gradual time release ingredient. Put this on in the morning and by noon, you'll look like you just returned from a trip to the Caribbean. After you shower -- which is recommended before you get into bed -- you see the color coming off, but your body will still have a bronze tan. I have used many of the products, and none leave your skin orange. There are even natural tan options, if you just want a hint of a tan.
If you're like me and are normally scared about applying self-tanner on your face, Xen-Tan even has a bronzer that gives you the perfect amount of glow and washes off with your makeup called the Perfect Bronze.
One issue I have had with Xen-Tan was that my feet would have strange lines on them a few days after applying the tan. Now, they've come up with a solution and it's the Xen-Tan Blending Balm. You can use the balm before you apply the tanning lotion, applying it to areas that you don't want tanned at all. Another option is applying the balm after you've applied the lotion, smoothing out rough areas like feet, wrists and knuckles.
A tip for anyone wanting to use Xen-Tan: if you exfoliate your body (recommend using the Xen-Tan Body Scrub), the product will go on smoother and easier. Also, make sure you are not wearing any lotion of any kind -- it will make the solution hard to even out. It is best used right after an exfoliating shower. You can always use the Xen-Tan Scent Secure lotion one hour after applying the tanner -- and it smells like cucumber melon! You will be shocked at how long the tan actually ends up lasting.
