Outside of the US comics still reign supreme, but are often formatted a bit differently. The latest comes from Titan Publishing in the UK featuring the Dark Knight vs. the Man of Steel in the aptly titled Batman Superman # 1. This explosive first issue features stories from Injustice Gods Among Us Chapters 1-4 as well as Batman/Superman ‘Cross World’ making for the ultimate first issue collection for fans.

The Injustice: Gods Among us storyline takes place prior to the events in the game and showcases how things changed after Superman is tricked into destroying the one thing he loves most. Now unwilling to let crime go unpunished, the heroes of our world must choose if they are with Superman or against him, but not every country will submit to his new world order and neither will Batman. This might be one of the most shocking variations of any story to come out of the DC Universe. Here is becomes clear very quickly that no one is safe and things will never be the same. Finally the fears Luthor and others have always had for what Superman could do comes to fruition and showcase a whole different side of the Man of Steel. This is a dark and violent world that works excellent creating a blood soaked tale that fans are sure to not forget. It becomes even more interesting seeing which characters choose which side and how it affects the overall relationships between them. The artwork is great and really brings this story to life using both the graphic bloody action and dynamic panels to make for some excellent storytelling. Whether you are a gaming fan or not this series is easily one of the best outside the normal continuity to date. It takes fans on a unique journey where no one is safe and constantly shocks in the directions it goes, without ever making you frustrated due to knowing it will eventually just go back to normal.

The Batman/Superman “Cross World” story tells a tale of the first time meeting of Batman and Superman, but who has possessed Catwoman? Who or what is killing Wayne Enterprises employees and most importantly why are there two Batmen? This is one of those stories that is short on dialogue but strong with story. Jae Lee and Ben Oliver craft a strange and beautiful visual treat to bring Greg Pak’s story to life. The story is told using mostly the thoughts of these two iconic heroes getting to see their complete opposite views and thought on the situations they are dealing allowing fans to see how different they see everything. There is a certain darkness to this story that comes across in the artwork giving it an almost Burton-esque vibe without making it feel like something unbelievable. These characters relationship has always been one that was complicated and if this first story is any indication it is sure to put it all on the table to create a great series.

Don’t miss out on this great compilation issue from Titan Publishing that is sure to please any fan of Batman and/or Superman as well as shed more light on the Injustice game backstory like only DC can. Grab your issue of Batman Superman # 1 available now.
