Tory Johnson has written a non-diet weight loss book The Shift that chronicles what it took to motivate her own impressive and public weight loss. Threatened by the prospect of losing her job with Good Morning America, she changed a lifetime of bad habits.
Johnson decided not to follow an established program because of an aversion to being told what to do. Instead, she charted her own course. Her book delves less into what was on her plate than it does into what was on her mind.
Her plan was simple: eat a lot less (she cut her portion sizes in half), don’t exceed 25 carbs a day (avoiding all white flour, sugar, and potatoes), and avoid any “fake” food. That carb limit wouldn’t be optimal for many people, but it worked for her.
Her lifestyle presented challenges. She goes to glitzy events and is plied with foodstuffs by businesses who want her to feature their products on television. She also has a husband and young twins and couldn’t impose her limitations on them.
Each chapter in The Shift includes a couple mantras that sum up how Johnson’s thoughts and actions gradually changed. In a year, she lost 62 pounds.
