THOR: Movie Review

In the film industry, Marvel has always been the company to beat. With countless Marvel movies already released and countless Marvel films coming to theaters soon, it has increasingly reached the top of the charts in most anticipated movies.

Chris Hemsworth stars as Thor in this box office hit. Cast down from Asguard without his powers by Odin (Anthony Hopkins) for starting a war against Jotunheim, an ice world ruled by vicious creatures, Thor is forced to live among humans on Earth. His famous hammer was also cast down to Earth, only to be released when someone was worthy enough to take on the Thor title. Several fans can recall the scene after the credits in "Iron Man 2", where S.H.I.E.L.D found the hammer, this scene was addressed the film.

On Earth, Thor befriends Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), an astrophysicist who unknowingly teaches him kindness and love.  All the meanwhile, Thor's brother, Loki (Tom Hiddleston), learns his true identity, which in turn lures him to the dark side, a path he was already beginning to tread. Thor must regain his hammer to end Loki's havoc, though he is not yet worthy.

One of the most acknowledged and respected facts about Marvel films are the fact that they have always been relatable and believable to the viewers.  Even if the viewer had no previous knowledge of the hero, it appealed to everyone for different reasons.  When introduced to Norse mythology, they lose a little of that essence the others held. They were, however, able to preserve a little bit of the realism by the humor by introducing the comedic flavor we have all grown to love in Marvel films.

Another well respected aspect to Marvel films nowadays is the fact that they are all connected to each other, as if each one was a direct sequel to the last.  For how many Marvel films that are being released in the near future, that is incredibly impressive.  Thor is no exception.

On the upside, those who are familiar with Thor's background and mythology will most likely enjoy this film profusely. On the downside, those unfamiliar with either may not fully appreciate what all the film had to offer.

Overall, Thor is a very enjoyable film that should be watched if you are a fan of Marvel.

You can watch "Thor" at AMC Showplace 16 in South Bend, IN.
