The zombie genre continues to be one of the most popular in the horror genre thanks to films like Shaun of the Dead and the TV series The Walking Dead. Everyone seems to be trying to put their own spin on it these days, but sadly more often than not miss the mark. The latest Army of the Damned sports some icons in the industry including Tony Todd, Michael Berryman, and Nick Principe as well as singer Joey Fatone and wrestler Tommy Dreamer, but does it pack the bloody punch expected for this genre?
Army of the Damned follows the filming of a hit reality TV show that goes horribly wrong when a group of small town cops respond to a call that brings a whole new meaning to the phrase, domestic disturbance. This is one of those films that is pretty obvious that it’s an independent film so you have to bring your expectations down a bit and hope that they put all their heart into making it work. At first this film is a bit of a mess with it all over the place, but does find its groove and ended up churning out a fairly entertaining film. The acting is pretty bad at times, but thanks to the crazy antics and really well done gore effects it makes it one of those cheesy fun films that is sure to entertain those that dig these kinds of films. There are moments where the film gets lost on itself and they head in directions that don’t make some sense, but you just have to sit back and watch it for the cheesy gory horror flick that it is.
This film has a lot of issues, but for an independent film they did a good job creating some bloody good fun. They were smart to fill it with recognizable actors in the industry as it gives the film more credibility and is sure to bring in fans of the genre and the good kill effects will keep the hardcore fans for the entirety.
