Much like the horror genre, there are new action films coming out all the time. These are probably two of the most popular straight to video genres, but sadly more often than not just fail to deliver. The latest, The Outsider features an interesting cast with Craig Fairbrass, Jason Patric, Shannon Elizabeth, and James Caan, but does it bring anything new to the table or is it just another forgettable actioner?
The Outsider follows a British mercenary who comes to Los Angeles to identify his daughter’s remains only to find that it is not her and she is now missing. Now along with the help from a detective they follow a trail of intrigue, desperation and rage to bring down anyone in their way to find the truth and hopefully rescue his daughter. Despite having a good supporting cast this is Faribrass’ show. The story is pretty simple and tries to bring some twists and turns into the mix but it never steps beyond average. The performances were all decent but nothing that really stands out. Fairbrass is a decent enough actor, but there is just something about him that just doesn’t work as a leading man. He’s not horrible or anything, but he just seems to play off more as a henchman instead of the hero. The rest of the cast seem to be just phoning it in and never really offer much more than average performances. There is plenty of action here and all of it works fine but is pretty average at best.
This is one of those movies that works fine for what it is but never pulls off enough to stand out. In a sea of action films this probably works better than some, but could have worked so much better with a bit better fleshing out and more creative action sequences. Find out for yourself when The Outsider hits stores on March 11th.
