Tom Hardy burst onto the scene with Bronson and has since been making his mark with films like Warrior and the upcoming Dark Knight Rises. Chris Pine successfully took over the role of Captain Kirk in the reboot of Star Trek and has since also been starting to pop up here and there. Much like all the action guys, they eventually end up in some romantic comedy and they are no exception, with their latest This Means War tried spicing it up with some action.
This Means War follows two CIA agents who fall for the same girl. They decide to let her decide who she wants to be with to make it fair, but all fair in love and war as they use all the resources in the CIA to push her affection in their favor. Instead of the normal romantic comedy, they opted just enough action to make it more interesting. This isn’t a perfect film by any means, but if you hate this genre and have to see one, this would be the one to see. The action scenes are well executed and help to make this film move forward at a decent pace. Everyone works well together with what they have to work with, which isn’t all that much. This could have easily worked if they made it an action comedy and added a smaller amount of the romantic comedy aspect to it as opposed to the other way around. This would have been a good chance to make a SPY vs. SPY film with real people, but would need more depth to the story. Chelsea Handler has some of the funniest dialogue, but is reined in a bit too much. Most films like this fall flat on its face, but these guys help it to at least roll back to its feet at times.
When this movie works it’s funny and filled with great action, when it doesn’t it’s pretty much like every other bad romantic comedy. The guys add some much needed charisma and character to this otherwise average film. Their chemistry and ability to carry the action will make this a decent film for a guy to be able to take his lady to and get the points needed for seeing a romantic comedy.
