The things that scare me in horror movies are not Hockey mask wearing killers, guys in red and green sweaters, or psycho doctors (looking at you Doctor Giggles) it is the things you can't get away from. Things that will follow you no matter where you go or what you do. You can kill Jason, you can get away from Michael Myers, but some things there is no way to stop, and that is what is scary about the newest effort from Rob Zombie.
A radio DJ is sent a mysterious record that has ties to the witches of Salem. She plays it on the radio and her life goes into chaos. And not in a fun way.
Really Rob Zombie is not the greatest director. His Halloween remakes were not that interesting, House of a 1,000 Corpses was idiotic, and The Devil's Rejects was okay but a tad white trashy to me. So I picked up this movie expecting more of the same white trash culture and loads of graphic gore. That is not what I actually got. What I got was a trippy, is this happening or isn't it in the vein of Rosemary's Baby. I'm not saying it is that good but it's the same feel.
Sherri Moon Zombie has to be given credit she is not that bad of an actress and you will feel for her character. She makes you feel like you want to save her but you're watching a movie and you're not much more than a voyeur to a terrible series of events. She's great. There's no other word for her performance.
If you are checking this movie out in the hopes of a gore-fest you will be disappointed. This is about a woman's slow decline into terror. There is no help, no savior to show up and fight off the hell that is her future. By the time you finish this film you will realize she was doomed from the start.
This is a terrifying movie, at least it was to me. It's a return to classic horror, where the horror is not the blood and guts but the feeling of 'Do I really want to be here?' that filled the movies of previous decades. Four Stars.
I'm adding a link to the film's content advisory page here if you want to show this to your kids, I wouldn't but you might be a terrible parent so it's up to you. There is also a link to the film's website here. I've also added a link to the purchasing page of Amazon here.
So if you want to have a few nights of pure scared to close your eyes terror check this film out.
