The new Chevy Camaro SuperSport is awesome. It was wonderful to have it for a week’s test drive. The car was an attractive jet Black model, six-speed manual transmission, with a gorgeous interior trimmed in a color called Inferno Orange.
GM has brought back the iconic Camaro and it is definitely turning heads. Whether stopped at a gas station, post office, or even a parking lot of a mall, at least one person would walk over and comment about the good-looking design. At one fueling stop along an Oklahoma highway on Labor Day, an almost identical model pulled in at the next tank over. The other driver and I looked at each other, smiled, and got out of the cars. His Camaro was only one month old and he was from Austin, taking his daughter to college. Both cars: black. Both cars: SuperSport model. Both cars: optional 20-inch wheels. This new Camaro is certainly a head-turner, but easily recognized for its retro-styling.
The Camaro is considered a “pony car”, the name established by the Mustang. It is an American muscle car in every sense of the word. The Mustang and Camaro have been battled ever since they were first introduced. Isn’t competition fun?
The test model was a 2SS trim model. It also is available in the LS, 1LT, 2LT, and 1SS trim levels. This 2SS model was great, considered the top-of-the-line. It was equipped with a 6.2 liter V8. A V6 engine is also available, but if you want a muscle car, stay with the V8. It has high-performance, fast acceleration, and cruises down the road so easily; it leaves other vehicles in the dust before you realize they are not in your rear view mirror anymore. The Camaro SuperSport is meant to be driven.
The interior is really nice. The jet-black interior was accented with inferno orange stripes and stitching. Actually, the color was almost red, but the contrast is attractive. Even the steering wheel, shift know, door armrest, and center console have that special orange stitching in the leather, which gives the car a special look. The front seats are comfortable and on longer trips, you do not feel tired. The back seat is much like the Mustang – adequate, but not roomy. If you want an interior that offers a lot more luxury, move up to a Buick or Cadillac and get a performance sedan.
The car definitely moves out without the driver hardly aware of the fast speed. Once, I was following my wife Judy in my truck while she was driving the Camaro along some twisting back roads. It was all I could do to keep up with her. The car held the road so securely that she rarely had to slow down for a curve. Some Camaro fans have expressed the disappointment that GM does not offer additional performance packages, much like is available for the Mustang. For die-hard muscle-car addicts, this is important, but for the average American driver simply wanting a great performance coupe, one of the base models Camaro’s is hard to beat.
The LS model starts near $22,000, but that’s with a V6. Our top-of-the-line 2SS model had a MSRP of $33,945. Bottom sticker price on our test model was $37,865, but it had quite a few options and additional packages such as a sunroof, RS tail lamps, roof ditch molding, and more. EPA mileage ratings set this car at 24 mpg on the highway, but only 16 mpg in the city. I suppose that is because it is difficult to not race the engine when you are sitting at a traffic signal. The overall average for the week’s test drive was 20.6, which included city, rural, and highway driving.
This 2010 Chevy Camaro SuperSport is almost a work of art in its good looks. It is a beauty to drive, both in the appearance and the performance. It turns heads, both on the road or off. It looks like it is going 100 mph even when it is standing still. I think that the GM engineers delivered on their promise with this vehicle. Check it out yourself at a General Motors or Chevrolet dealership.
