Over the years WellGo USA has been bringing a wide variety of films to the market, mostly from the Asian market. Their latest shifts the focus to a US produced film focusing on the drug game with Kid Cannabis, but is it a big score or will it wind up being a tainted batch?
Kid Cannabis follows an Idaho teen dropout who builds a multimillion-dollar marijuana ring by partnering with his best friend and their pals to run drugs across the Canadian border and bankrolled by a dope czar and supplied by an ex-government grower, may leave this ex-pizza boy in way over his head. This is another one of those true stories that is unbelievable just in the nature of those involved. At first glance this film looks like it may be some sort of comedy and while there is some amusing moments it is far from it. This is your typical story of a drug dealers rise to success and fall that just happens to be a chubby nerdy kid and his wacked out friends. The cast do a fine job with their respective parts with the only real reckognizable faces being Amanda Tapping (Stargate SG-1), Ron Perlman (Sons of Anarchy), and John C. McGingley (SCRUBS). They bring just enough star power to the film to help it stand out more than just another straight to video film, but not so much that they overshadow the rest of the production. There are some interesting directions in this story in watching them make their business work making it more interesting, but never really steps too far out of the average story overall.
While this film isn’t breaking any barriers down in regards to offering up anything all that new, but it is an interesting film to check out. If you are one that enjoys these types of true stories that are a bit different then you really should give this film a try when it hits stores on July 8th.
