Imagine cooling off with buckets of water pouring over your head. That's one of the fun activities for kids of all ages at the Sprayground at Riverside Park http://www.lynchburgva.gov/Index.aspx?page=522. If you haven't taken your kids here yet, you are all missing out on a lot of fun.
Watching the children play is almost as much fun as playing in the water yourself. There is a tall tower with buckets that fill with water, eventually emptying on the ground and sometimes the heads of children below. There are water spouts spraying up from the ground on a cycle that keeps kids guessing.
A favorite with many of the children are the fish that spray water from their mouths. Some children run away from the water and others run into and under the water. In addition to waterspouts coming from the ground, there are waterfalls cascading down from above. It's like having a huge watergun fight from every direction.
The Sprayground opened in July 2010 and has provided water fun for city children for almost a year. It is 1900 square feet in size and is part of an ongoing renovation at Riverside Park. The Junior League of Lynchburg helped with funding for the Sprayground. Parents can watch their children from the sidelines or join in the fun.
The Sprayground is a green facility and uses recirculated water. The play area is built on concrete and is ADA accessible so that it can be enjoyed by all.
Put on your swimsuit, grab your sunscreen and towel, and load the kids in the car. Their laughter and shrieks of joy will be the best reward of all. The Sprayground is open daily from Memorial Day through October 1 from 11am-7pm, weather permitting.
