Milwaukee may not have as many hot dog stands as Chicago, but that number is rising.

With the opening of Johnny's Franks on Milwaukee’s North side, there is a new, and welcome, addition.

Located just a block off Capitol Drive, Johnny’s Franks, with it’s bright yellow sign and interior, is a splash of color in a tiny strip mall. The color is emblematic of Vienna Beef, the brand that Johnny’s Franks sells. Recent graduates of Hot Dog University, the owners are proud to show off their knowledge and to offer the superior Vienna Beef product for their dogs and sausages.

The menu at Johnny’s Franks is simple. A Classic Dog, a Chicago Style Dog, Corn Dogs, Polish Sausage, an Italian Beef sandwich, and a small array of sides, including fries, mozzarella sticks and pizza puffs.

To order, you walk up to the bullet-proof glass counter - a leftover from the previous owners. There are a few tables to dine at, but most of the business, like a majority of hot dog stands, is take-away.
As business grows, there are plans to add more tables and a lunch-counter type dining area, as well as a slightly expanded menu.

The hot dogs here are very good, as one would expect from Vienna Beef. They are beefy and juicy, and have a nice snap to the casing. The steamed buns are poppy-seed, but plain will be offered in the future as well. The fries are generic, but good and crispy, and go well with the dogs. All the hot dogs and Polish come with a handful of fries included in the price.

Johnny’s Franks offers daily specials, and a satisfying meal can be had for less than $5.00. It’s a great value, and if you’re in the area, a stop here is a must.
