One of the hardest horror genres to get right, the hauntings have been getting some great additions as of late. Thankfully this seems to have sparked a wave of people trying to do something different and effective breathing new life into the genre. The latest, The Quiet Ones goes the route of the period piece taking things back to the 70s but does it have the story and intelligent structure to pull it off or should this film be exorcised instead?

The Quiet Ones follows a university professor and a team of students conduct an experiment on a young woman, uncovering terrifyingly dark, unexpected forces in the process. This is one of those films that use the slow build to allow the full effect of the terror to come to the forefront. As with any of these films, the use of the period adds to the overall experience, with this case being in the 70s. There are parts here where it does drag a bit, but most of the time is almost necessary for the direction of the story. It is interesting that the evil they are dealing with is not the only evil that is present when you look at some of the characters choices as it moves forward. As it builds up the true nature of each character comes into focus showcasing there is more here to deal with besides just the possession. This film works really well for what they are pushing for, but in an effort to keep the PG-13 rating never quite pushes the limits to give it that extra punch that would have pushed it over the edge. Despite this it still works to create a creepy and often disturbing film that will work for some and not for others.

This is one of the more successful films in this genre like the Conjuring, but its slow pace could put some viewers off. Hopefully people will sit it out and allow its slow build do its thing because it pays off fairly well in the end. If you are a fan of these types of films, then give The Quiet Ones a chance.
