The Wolf of Wall Street (movie)

This film does not say “greed is good” it is the film that shows the effects of greed. “The Wolf of Wall Street” is just under three hours long, and while it is true (it is based on the book by Jordan Belfort) detailing the rise and fall of stockbroker, conman and entrepreneur Belfort, played by Leonardo DiCaprio, it never feels as if we have stepped within him and his world. Part of the problem here is the way in which the story is told. DiCaprio narrates throughout much of the film, at one point breaking the fourth wall and speaking directly to the audience. This device is used so much that it pulls one out of the story itself, thus destroying the seamlessness which should be a part of the film. How can one connect with characters (especially ones as flat and cliché as these) when they are constantly being taken out of the story? The narration in this film is used to tell the story rather than show it. The end result of this is that it looks more like a power point presentation than a film.
“The Wolf of Wall Street” does have some funny moments, especially Belfort’s attempt to drive his car high on Quaaludes however there are some scenes which go on interminably to the point where it is almost embarrassingly clear that they should have yelled “CUT” about ten minutes before.
In addition to this, there is a level of implausibility. While Belfort is shown teaching others how to make money, con others etc., he himself, makes some of the stupidest mistakes, which in the end are his undoing. Since this movie is based on a book, one wonders if in fact he really did these things, and if so, did he unknowingly sabatoge himself?
This movie is more a study in human frailty than in greed. Yet, it is sad to note that as film, it lacks the depth that one would hope to see. Yes, this it is raucous, and raunchy, however there is no real redemption at the end. To find out who the real Jordan Belfort is, it is better to watch a Youtube video than to see this film.
