Everyone has seen The Wizard of Oz – right? Well actually as it turns out no. not everyone has seen The Wizard of Oz. For instance my very special “date” for the evening, 5 year old Somaya my beautiful granddaughter had not seen the show before. So clearly for Somaya and the many other young people I saw at the Pantages, The Wizard of Oz would be a huge treat. But how would it play to the older folks like me?
Not only was Somaya totally enthralled for the entire show but so was grandpa and about 2700 other folks in attendance. The current rendition of the classic story, The Wizard of Oz is pure magic saturated with energy, wit, humor and charm. When Dorothy played by Danielle Wade sang “Over the Rainbow” every heart in the audience stood still as their faces glowed with a soft smile. As each character was introduced, the Scarecrow by Jamie McKnight, the Tin Man by Mike Jackson and the Lion by Lee MacDougal the energy and humor continued to build. Indeed the entire cast was simply spectacular. However it was Nigel as Toto who got the greatest applause and a standing ovation. He deserved it.
As truly wonderful as the cast is the show is much more including one of the most eye popping sets I have ever seen. For that I salute Robert Jones (scenic and Costume Designer), Hugh Vanstone (Lighting Designer), Jon Driscoll (Video/Projection Designer) and Daniel Brodie (Video/Projection Recreator) and anyone else I may have unintentionally missed who played a part in creating this true spectacle.
The Wizard of Oz currently at the Pantages Theatre is a seriously fun show and any Los Angeles area parent who does not take his or her child age 5 and above to see is in my opinion guilty of extreme neglect. It will leave both parent and child with lifelong beautiful memories. It is a far too short three week run so grab your tickets now.
