'Nebraska' (Season 2, Episode 8) begins where we left off in 'Pretty Much Dead Already' with Rick putting a bullet in Sophia after it was discovered she'd been turned into a zombie or "Walker." Most of the episode covers the aftermath of Sophia's death while Hershel (Scott Wilson) comes to the realization that he'd been harboring false hope for his wife whom he'd kept in a barn even after she'd become a Walker.
While "The Walking Dead" had been building hype for weeks for the premiere of "Nebraska," most of the episode began to drag halfway through until it had the pace of a limping zombie. Most of the episode dealt with the messy clean up of hauling zombie bodies away to be burned and digging graves for Sophia and Hershel's family.
The largest chunk of the episode centered around Hershel running away from the house to get drunk in the local bar. Rick goes to talk some sense into Hershel. The scene drags out and proves incredibly boring as Hershel goes on about his disallusionment with the world and holding out false hope for his wife.
Meanwhile Lori hits the road to find Rick. A Walker shuffles out into the middle of the road right as Lori is looking at the map. The Walker-turned-roadkill smashes the car window and Lori's car goes flying, flips over and crashes. Whatever happened to Lori after that is anyone's guess because we're back at the tavern listened to Hershel belly aching again.
Perhaps the one surprising twist in 'Nebraska' (and the most exciting part in the whole episode) is when a pair of shady characters show up at the bar. Immediately the two want to know where Rick and the others are living and want in on the sweet life at the Hershel farm. Rick refuses and he takes the sleezy characters out in quick showdown fashion with a few well-placed bullets to the brain.
'Nebraska' is a slow and a disappointing opening episode, especially for fans who are looking for zombies and gore, not long scenes with lots of dialogue and little action. The one scene that piqued my interest was where Lori crashes on the side of the road. Did the Walker-roadkill- zombie get up off the road in search of Lori stuck in the car? Will Lori lose the baby? Is she even alive? Who knows. There wasn't even a teaser or a cut to Lori in the car to see what state she was in at the end of the episode. Overall 'Nebraska' was lackluster, too slow and most of the zombies were already dead.
