Some see Valentine’s Day as nothing more than an excuse to sell greeting cards. Hollywood, on the other hand, sees it as another time to get people to the movies and usually select that time of year to release romantically themed movies. One movie that is sure to attract couples is “The Vow”.
“The Vow” centers on young married couple Paige (Rachel McAdams) and Leo (Channing Tatum). Tragedy strikes this very much in love couple when they are involved in an auto accident that leaves Leo with minor injuries and Paige in a coma. When Paige finally emerges from her coma the memory of the last five years of her life are gone, including those of her meeting, falling in love and marrying Leo. Can true love actually happen again?
Granted this movie has “chick flick” written all over it and maybe it is; but just because a movie is of the romance genre, does not mean only women can appreciate it. “The Vow” is a very well made movie that any adult can enjoy. It is filled with great, well rounded characters that we care about. They’re all performed by talented actors (Jessica Lange was outstanding in her support role as Paige’s mother). You really do fall in love with these people. Even the cinematography helps bring out the romance between these two people.
The movie has its share of slow moments, but there are some pretty special moments during the movie too, and some nice “Aw” moments thrown in here and there. What was a surprise was the realism of the movie. Often these movies have to rely on a little “movie magic” which is a scene we all know could probably NEVER happen in real life, but since we are watching a movie, we accept it. “The Vow” doesn’t take any easy shortcuts. If the events in this movie really happened, and they ARE inspired by true events, you can accept the way things work out in “The Vow” from how Leo reacts when he first realizes his wife doesn’t know who he is to the uncomfortable moments he experiences with her family.
The movie should play very well opening weekend. The theater showing an advanced screening in City Place was packed and at least 150 other people were turned away. There is a fantastic message about earning love which is something else that is often missing from these movies. It’s present in “The Vow”. It is rated PG-13 for an accident scene, sexual content, partial nudity and some language
