The Vampire Diaries season 3 continued Thursday night with episode 13, "Bringing Out the Dead," on the CW 11 in Queens, and finally, some answers were given about the Originals and that coffin.
Elijah was back, and it was what was expected and so much more. It was uncertain whose side he was on, as Klaus tried to lure him with the promise of a family reunion, while Damon tried to plan with him to take down Klaus. Abby and Bonnie were able to open the coffin, but that was when things got interesting. Elijah undaggered Finn, Kol, and Rebekah, and they were angry with their brother. The Salvatores left the Originals to take care of family business, but little did they know what—rather, who—came out of that locked coffin. It was Esther, which wasn't much of a surprise after Alice Evans' name was in the opening credits, and she wasn't there for the reason Klaus thought she was. She was there to forgive him, not kill him, and wanted them to be a family again.
Now, as nice as a family reunion is, this is the Originals you're talking about. Elena's never really safe as long as Klaus is alive and no one's making a deal with him to ensure it, but could Esther be the answer to keep him calm for now? Could he just need a mother's love and forgiveness? It's highly unlikely, since this is Klaus, after all, and it looks like the weapon Elena, Damon, Stefan, and Bonnie hoped they had in their hands is no longer a factor. If they want to take down Klaus, the answer doesn't seem to lie in the Originals. They're going to have to find it elsewhere.
Meanwhile, the evidence against Meredith was piling up, as the stake in Brian and the knife in Bill both came from places Meredith knew about. It wasn't looking good for the new woman in Alaric's life—until he was stabbed when she had an airtight alibi. Alaric once again died in this episode—this time at Elena's hands to ensure he would come back—and recent episodes have really shown Elena and Alaric as a family unit. He's the closest thing to family she has left in Mystic Falls, and it's hard to imagine what would happen if he didn't come back one day. Even though it had to be done, it was heartbreaking to watch her kill him to make sure since they didn't know who stabbed him. Speaking of, their prime suspect had an alibi, leaving you to wonder just who's behind these stabbings. Is it part of Klaus' plan? Could Meredith still somehow be involved?
There was also Caroline and Bill's storyline, which was heartbreaking as well. Bill was just working towards redeeming himself by helping Tyler, and it was thanks to Meredith giving him vampire blood that he was even still alive to be stabbed. However, it wasn't meant to be, and Bill refused to become a vampire. This led to a tearful goodbye scene as Caroline begged her father to drink blood and he refused but let her know he was still proud of her. It almost seemed like he had to die, as he was Tyler's best shot at breaking the bond. Yes, he had started working with him and gave Tyler some of the information he needed, but it's going to take a whole lot for him to break the sire-bond. Plus, with this being Mystic Falls, of course there had to be some tragedy just as Caroline and Bill were fixing their relationship.
"Bringing Out the Dead" also showed some more Matt and Caroline and Matt and Elena friendship, as he was there for both of them. He may be the only human in the group, but he has become a member of the group ever since learning the truth about everything, and he stayed with Elena while they waited for Alaric to come back to life. It's good that Elena has that human connection, and she does need him around, even though it's not in the way Klaus suggested—marrying, having kids, continuing the bloodline for him.
The Damon-Elena-Stefan love triangle was still present, as that Damon and Elena kiss hasn’t been forgotten, and Klaus and Elijah even offered the Salvatore brothers some perspective when they mentioned their love for the originator of the Petrova line. Both Salvatores love Elena, and that hasn't changed. But what will happen in the future between the three? Will one of them turn her like Klaus suggested? Will she get caught in the middle and pay with her life? Is he right that they're the worst thing for her?
Overall, it was a good episode, as it's impossible not to love episodes with Elijah. There was heartbreak, some humor (XOXO, Damon), loss, and even some answers. It opened up the storyline to progress in ways that are a bit hard to see just where some of it is going, and that's what makes for good television.
