The Vampire Diaries season 3 continued Thursday night on CW 11 in Queens with episode 15, "All My Children," and the battle between the Originals reached a critical point.
The Damon-Elena-Stefan love triangle was still present, and her jealousy did shine through just a bit—but not too much—when she saw that Damon had slept with Rebekah. She had every right to be upset; after all, Rebekah had just tried to kill her. Stefan did think she was better off without either of them, but the old Stefan is beginning to show more and more, and it seems like only a matter of time before those two possible get back together. That seems more likely than Damon and Elena getting together considering recent events, but whatever does happen, the show's writers are handling it the right way so far.
In this episode, the Salvatores originally sided against Elena when she didn’t like the fact that Elijah had to die as part of the spell, but they ended up having no choice but to stop the spell in order to save her. The Damon-Stefan scenes are always among the best, and that was true once again, especially the car scene as they flipped a coin and later when Stefan confronted Damon about being the one to turn Abby despite the fact that Stefan lost the coin toss. Damon knew Elena would hate whoever did that, and he took it to add to the list of things she was mad at him for.
While the Salvatore brothers scenes were good, the Elena and Elijah scenes were the best. There's a reason why many don't want to see Elijah daggered again, and this episode showed just that. Yes, he took Elena, putting her life in danger by leaving her with Rebekah, but he left her a note in apology in the end, and still, it seems very hard to hate the Original. That's down to the writing of the character and Daniel Gillies' flawless portrayal.
Elena and Bonnie's friendship is going to be stretched thin yet again, this time because Abby ended up the collateral damage. In order to stop the spell and save Elena, Damon and Stefan had to figure out a way to severe Esther's connection to the Bennett bloodline. The only way to do that was to make sure one of the living Bennetts was no longer a witch, and Damon took care of that by turning Abby. As Caroline pointed out to Elena, Bonnie keeps being the one who ends up getting hurt. Will she ever find some happiness?
The Originals seem to make every episode better, and even with the trouble they mean for Mystic Falls, it's hard not to want them around longer—especially Klaus as he tries to woo Caroline. "All My Children" saw him taking the bait and following her out of the Grill, having to avoid a car (which was pretty amusing for an Original), and asking her about her hopes and dreams. It sounded cliché, but at the same time, it wasn't too hard to almost feel bad for him that she wasn't biting like he hoped.
Finally, the mystery of the Mystic Falls killer continued, and Damon still thought it was Meredith. He wasn't just pulling that out of thin air, and the way the episode ended—with Alaric finding Bill's file and the knife, then Meredith shooting at him—it looked like Damon was right all along, and she is psycho.
The episode certainly had its moments, and it did leave questions open about where the series is going next with the Originals, the love triangle, Alaric's life (his ring is losing its power), and Rebekah's revenge. It was pretty much the perfect cliffhanger episode going into a month-long break, and it left you wanting more from the Originals.
